508. Alfred P⁶ Gorby (Joseph⁵, Samuel George⁴, Joseph³, Joseph², Samuel¹) was born in Meigs Co, OH. October 19, 1837. Alfred died March 27, 1894 in Hancock Co, OH., at 56 years of age.

He married Martha Gallant in Hancock Co, OH., December 22, 1857. Martha was born in OH. August 24, 1838. Martha was the daughter of William Gallant and Emily ?. Martha died October 19, 1919 in Hancock Co, OH., at 81 years of age. Her body was interred. Buried in Hassan Cemetery, Orange Twp, Hancock Co, OH. Ref: CEN1850, CFZ1 - Orange Twp, Hancock Co, page 489. Martha Gallant appears on this Census with her parents William and Emily Gallant, age 11.

Ref: CEN1860, CZF1 - Martha appears on this Census with her husband, Samuel T Gorby, age 20. A 2 or 3 month old female child also appears on this Census with them but the ink had faded before being microfilmed and is illegible.

Ref: CEN1900 - Grandaughter Pearl B Gorby was living with Martha (Gallant) Gorby.

Ref: BK21-4.22.98 (1936) Alfred P Gorby moved to Hancock Co, OH with his parents when he was two years of age, growing to manhood on their farm seven miles south of Rawson on Riley Creek. He spent his entire life in agricultural pursuits.

During the year 1869 he helped organize a Mission Church in their neighborhood, at first holding only a Union Sunday School, with an occasional preaching service. On July 10, 1870, the Riley Creek Baptist Church was organized in his home, therefore he can, properly, be called one of the Fathers of that organization.

Few who have come in to that church in recent years realize what it cost to adhere to one's faith when Mr and Mrs Gorby embraced the belief of the Baptist faith.

Alfred P Gorby stands in the first ranks among laymen in point of assistance in church building and religious work. Two sons, three daughters, and a stepson were reared in his home and all became members and earnest workers in the Baptist Church.

Both he and his wife are buried in Hassan Cemetery, 1 mi east of old homestead in Hancock Co, OH.

Alfred and his wife Martha appear on the 1860 Census with a female child, but the ink was so faded the name could not be read. Some of their children were born after 1867 when records began, so they are recorded in the Hancock Co Birth Register. It is unfortunate that the 1860 Census could not be read, as apparently that daughter either died before the 1870 Census was taken, or she was mis-recorded as a female.

On the 1870 Census their children are given as Edmind 12, Emma Idell 10, Samuel 8, Henry 5 and Hannah 3.

On the 1880 Census, Alfred and his family are recorded in the same household with his parents, Joseph and Sarah. Alfred was a farmer, and the children listed with them were Samuel 17, Henry 15, Hanah 12 and Leana 4.

Alfred P Gorby and Martha Gallant had the following children:

+ 1514 ii. Emanuel Bishop was born February 6, 1857.

+ 1515 iii. Samuel T Gorby was born 1862.

+ 1516 iv. William Henry Gorby was born March 30, 1864.

+ 1517 v. Hanna J Gorby was born October 15, 1867.

+ 1518 vi. Leanna Gorby was born May 16, 1876.

1519 vii. Frank Archer Gorby was born in Orange Twp. Hancock Co, OH. February 5, 1878. Frank died July 15, 1878 in Orange Twp. Hancock Co, OH., at less than one year of age. CZF1 - Frank Archer Gorby's death is recorded in Hancock Co, Death Records as Franck Archey, died 1878 Sept 15, age 7 months 10 days, died in Orange Twp, of inflammation of the brain.
