22. Richard⁴ Gorby (Joseph³, Joseph², Samuel¹) was born in Chester, Pa. 1792.

He married Margaret Cloud 1816. Margaret was born in England. 1797. Margaret was the daughter of Robert Cloud and Evangeline Carter. Ref: GWG1 - Margaret (Cloud) Gorby is listed in the will of Joseph Carter, Chester Twp, Delaware Co, PA. This will was signed July 16, 1828 and proved Feb 6, 1830. This information from "Delaware Co Abstracts of Wills 1785-1835".

CEN1850: Margaret, age 50, lived in Chester, Delaware Co, PA with her sons Robert C and James. Others living in the household were Joanna Willkers, Lar** Devy and Peo Green, ages 21, 10 and 3, all born in PA. Ref: GWG1-7.16.99 - Originally listed in the 1936 Book as Joseph Richard Gorby, son of Joseph generation II and Mary Littlejohn/Stidham/Loan, census data indicates that Joseph and Richard were both sons of Joseph generation III and Hannah Stilley. Census data also indicates that Joseph was born prior to 1790, and Richard was born after 1790, so this individual has been renamed 'Richard'. This census data is listed under Joseph generation III.

(1936) Joseph Richard Gorby was probably born in Chester Co, PA. He was a shoemaker by trade, making fine shoes for women, living in Chester, PA.

A most touching story is told of him. A creek ran between the village where Joseph lived and a neighboring village. A dispute arose as to which village should pay for the building of a bridge across the stream. These villages were in Delaware. It was finally agreed to gamble for it and a friendly wrestling match was decided upon.

A wrestler was chosen from each village, and the loser's village was to build the bridge. Joseph Richard Gorby was the wrestler chosen from his village, and in the bout Joseph's adversary's neck was broken. This worried and grieved Joseph so much, that in 1840, when his youngest son Edward James was only nine years old, he left home, and they never heard from him nor of him again.

Ref: CEN1850 - A Richard Gorby is listed in Brandywine Hundred, New Castle Co, DE, age 55, Farmer, born in DE. He is listed with the household of Thomas and May Batton, Farmers. This may be the same person given the above story. In the same census, Margaret lived in Chester, Delaware Co, PA with her sons Robert C and James.
