130. Lewis M⁵ Gorby (Richard⁴, Joseph³, Joseph², Samuel¹) was born in Chester, Pa. 1825.

He married Mary E Horn in Davidson Co, TN., September 15, 1847. Mary was born ABT. 1825. Ref: CEN1870 Ref: 4.5.99 - LDS Batch M519142. Added last name, marriage date and place. (1936) Lewis M Gorby married a girl from Tennessee and they lived in Tennessee. He served with the Confederate Army during the Civil War, this fighting against his two brothers who were serving with the Union Army. Lewis lived in or near Nashville and he lost his life at Memphis when the Confederate Army was blowing up a fort to prevent its falling into the hands of the Union Army.

When the explosion did not occur as was expected, Lewis went inside to find the trouble, and the explosion occurred while he was inside the fort. During the war he lost his life, his plantation, and all he owned. He was a First Lieutenant.

Ref: CEN1870 - The above story of Lewis M Gorby being the only Gorby to die in Confederate Service during the Civil War, while quite the tale, is untrue. Lewis M Gorby appears on the 1850, 1860 AND 1870 Federal Census for Davidson Co, TN. Living in the 6th Ward of Nashville, Davidson Co, TN age 44 occupation paper hanger, born in DE. Also listed wife Mary E age 43 born in TN, son Richard L age 10 born in TN and daughter Carrie age 6 born in TN.
