71. Vincent Parsons4 Gorby (Ebenezer3, Thomas2, Samuel1) was born in Marshall Co, WV, near Rosby's Rock. June 2, 1822. Vincent died 1885 in Barnesville, OH., at 63 years of age. His body was interred. Barnsville, OH.

He married Elizabeth Bonar in Marshall, WV., October 24, 1848. Elizabeth was born in Marshall, WV. ABT. 1825. Elizabeth was the daughter of David L Bonar and Sarah Bonar. Elizabeth died in Nelson, Nuckolls, NE.. Her body was interred. Nelson, NE. (1936) Vincent Parsons Gorby was the 13th and youngest child of Ebenezer and Prudence (Parsons) Gorby.

He at one time had a general store at Rosby's Rock, WV, and owned a farm near the Bowman Ridge M E Church, of which church he was a trustee in 1853. He was one of the witnesses to his uncle John Gorby's will, signed February 16, 1814.

Later he moved to Jefferson County, OH when the children were very young. His health began to fail, so he moved to his farm in Monroe Co, OH, near Jerusalem, but finally had to leave the farm, so he moved to Barnesville, OH where he spent the remainder of his life and is buried there. His wife died and is buried in Nelson, NE, where she was living with her two daughters.

Vincent Parsons Gorby and his wife, Elizabeth (Bonar) Gorby were strong characters, hospitable, kindly, and unselfish, and left behind them a line of men and women of strong personalities, most unselfish, hospitable, always seeing something to do outside their own little circle - a wonderful heritage.

child 356 ii. Thomas Jefferson Gorby was born in Marshall Co, WV, near Bowman Ridge M E Church. July 18, 1851. Thomas died August 11, 1854 in Marshall, WV., at 3 years of age. His body was interred. Bowman Ridge M E Church cemetery, Marshall Co, WV.

child 357 iii. Sarah Melvina Gorby was born in Marshall Co, WV, near Bowman Ridge M E Church. May 18, 1853. Sarah died August 1933 in Kansas City, MO., at 80 years of age. Her body was interred. Nelson, NE. (1936) Sarah Melvina Gorby never married, but she lived with her mother and her sister, Celia, a prominent educator in Nebraska, Sarah being the homemaker for the three, and then for the two after the death of their mother. They were most hospitable, making both young and old welcome in their pleasant home.

During the last years of their lives they lived with their sister, Prudence Alcinda (Gorby) Fogel, in Kansas City, MO. The mother and these two sisters are buried in Nelson, NE where they lived for many years. Sarah (Aunt Sallie to her nieces) died in August, 1933 at her sister's in Kansas City.

child 359 v. Celia Amanda Gorby was born in Marshall Co, WV, near Bowman Ridge M E Church. May 8, 1858. Celia died in Kansas City, MO.. Her body was interred. Nelson, NE. (1978) Celia Amanda Gorby moved with her parents when quite young to Barnesville, OH where she graduated from Barnesville high school, 1881. She was a briliant student, being valedictorian of her class, her oration being exceptionally fine. It is said that while giving her orations, a disturbance occured at the rear, but with composure she continued.

After graduation, Celia taught at Warren Twp School No 1, and was said to be much loved by all her pupils. From there she went to Nebraska, where she rose to prominence as an educator, graduating from Lincoln Normal School and later taking work at both the State University of Nebraska and the University of Chicago. On November 5, 1905 she passed the state examination in five subjects, receiving her state certificate.

There her school work covered 13 years in the grades and 17 years as high school teacher and principal, later city superintendent, and was one of the first women in Nebraska elected to the office of County Superintendent, at one time in the county where the State University is located, an especially high honor. Her work was done in Nelson, Harvard, McCook, Lincoln, and other Nebraska cities and towns.

Celia A Gorby was hospitable, genial, kindly, a very strong character. Her last years were spent with her sister in Kansas City. She is buried in Nelson, NE where she taught and lived for a number of years.
