42. John Ryan⁴ Gorby (Eli³, Thomas², Samuel¹) was born July 23, 1817. John died November 8, 1908 at 91 years of age.

He married twice. He married Sarah Miller AFT. 1894. Sarah was born September 8, 1830. Sarah was the daughter of William Miller and Sarah Lemley. Sarah died March 10, 1897 at 66 years of age. Ref: GM1

He married Rachel Miller in Tyler Co, WV., February 26, 1839. Rachel was born April 20, 1818. Rachel was the daughter of William Miller and Sarah Lemley. Rachel died April 15, 1895 at 76 years of age. (1978) Rachel (Miller) Gorby was the oldest daughter of William Miller. Birth-Death dates in the Gorby Book listed as 1818-1892.

Ref: GM1 - Added information on Rachel Miller parents and siblings. (1978) John Ryan Gorby died November 8, 1908 or November 7, 1909. He and his wife settled on the divide between Miller's Fork of Rocky Run, and Steele's Run, Wetzel Co, WV where they acquired 250 ac of ridge wood-land and built a log cabin. During their lifetime they cleared, fenced and got under cultivation, their entire farm. He specialized in Short Horn cattle, and C type Marino sheep.

John Ryan was not a shoemaker by trade, but made shoes for his own family and occasionally a friend.

John and his wife were both devoted Christians, both uniting with the M E Church when quite young. John was a plain, sincere man and his chief concern was "are we right with God?". He kept in close touch with his uncle Job Gorby's family, visiting them every year. His last visit to "Preacher Dave's" was in 1875. He kept in close touch with all his cousins.

Ref: VST1 - John Gorby was a trustee of Carney's Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church, in Silver Hill, Wetzel Co, WV. He signed the property deed with other trustees on February 4, 1861 when the property was given for the church by Stephen and Catherine Carney. He was reappointed in 1863. The church went out of existence prior to 1939.

John Ryan Gorby and Rachel Miller had the following children:

+ 225 vi. Marion Gorby was born February 12, 1851.
