16. Jonathon4 Gorby (Joseph3, Joseph2, Samuel1) was born in Brandywine Hundred, New Castle, DE. AFT. 1782. Jonathon died 1855 in Gallia Co, OH..
He married Nancy Ann Davis. Nancy was born February 26, 1790. Nancy was the daughter of Benjamin Davis and Hannah Ann Hannum. Nancy died 1841 in Union Twp, Hancock Co, OH., at 51 years of age. (1978) When Nancy (Davis) Gorby's health failed, she went to Hancock Co, OH to live with her daughter Hannah (Gorby) Garty, died there and is buried on the creek bank of that farm, as are also the Gartys.
A death or some great sorrow seemed to have caused her ill heath and death, and the same sorrow possibly made Jacob Gorby the quiet, rather sad man that he was. (1978) Jonathon Gorby was born at the old Joseph Gorby homestead, still standing in Claymont, DE in 1936. His brother Samuel had gone from Delaware to Columbiana Co, OH to settle. In 1814 he gave Jonathon 60 acres of this land as a start for his family, and most of his children were born in OH. Later he sold this land and moved to Stark Co, OH. Here his wife's health failed and she moved to Hancock Co, OH to be with her daughter Hannah Gorby Garty, died there in 1841 and is buried on that farm as is Hannah and Cyrus Garty. The farm is in Union Twp, Hancock Co, OH and is called Deeds Farm.
During her mother's illness, Julia Ann, their 11 year old daughter, kept house for her father. Later he moved to Portage Co, OH and later to Gallia Co, OH where he spent the rest of his life. His death in 1855 was tragic. While felling a tree, trying to warn an approaching wagon, the tree fell, striking and killing him. He is probably buried near there.
Jonathon Gorby was a man of small stature, and so light and quick on his feet that they used to say he could walk from his home in Portage Co to see his ailing wife in Hancock Co on muddy roads and get only the soles of his boots wet.
Jonathan was a good farmer and a very industrious and honest man. Much of his earliest history was given by James Gorby of near E Palestine, OH, a grandson of Samuel. Later history came from four great-grand daughters of Jonathon - Mrs Belle Gorby Coler, Mrs Estella Gorby Swinehart, Mrs Ethel Gorby Walter and Mrs Florence Kelly DeWese.
(1997) Jonathon's will was probated in Portage Co, OH in 1848, casting doubt that he lived until 1855.

Jonathan Gorby "of Columbiana County Ohio" purchased on March 6, 1827, Public Lands described as "the East half of the North East quarter section Twenty Six, in Township Eighteen, of Range Six, in the district of lands affected for sale at Steubenville, Ohio, containing seventy nine acres and seventy four hundredths of an acre." This is Osnaburg Township.

Hannah resided :. Settled in Union Twp, Hancock Co, OH. (1936) Hanna (Gorby) Garty must have been one of the older children, for when her brother Jacob was 14 years of age he went to Hancock Co, and "hired out" to work for his brother-in-law, Cyrus Garty. Later, when her mother's health failed, she went to live with her daughter Hannah, too, died there and is buried on the creek bank of that farm, as are also the Gartys.
Their farm, in 1936, was known as Deeds Farm.
